Finnish Fund-Raisers Strike Again

How the Finns do it, I do not know, but Tero has some excellent news about cultural grants received by four of Finland’s science fiction magazines. I’m not even going to think about what Emerald City could have done with €16,000, or even €500. Yes, it won a Hugo, but if I had applied for a grant like that in the UK I would have been lucky to get away with being laughed at.

  1. That’s not necessarily true; we got a generous grant from the Arts Council to set up The Write Fantastic (www.thewritefantastic.com). And I am a constant advocate of making the application anyway, rather than ruling ourselves out untried, untested. Especially these days, when the AC brief is all about inclusion and New Stuff rather than the same old same old…

    That’s good to know. Thank you. If I were involved in con running over here I’d certainly consider exploring it. However, I suspect there might be a difference between attitudes to professional authors and attitudes to fans.
