Ben Jeapes has written a long and thoughtful review of Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother. It is interesting reading in its own right, but this bit particularly caught my eye:
In Denver back in August, I witnessed an exciting confrontation between an American gent who called the Democrats socialists and an American lady who called the Republicans fascists. As the native of a continent with plenty of experience of both, I was thinking “rank amateurs, the lot of them”, but Americans get like that when they talk politics
Um, yes. Sorry America, but he has a point.
nod. Randy Newman makes a very similar point in A few words in defense of our country
And you know, not having real communists or real fascists in charge is a very good thing.
Thanks for the pointer to the review. As for his comment “Americans get like that when they talk politics” I would add that it is more that just politics. Consider that a size portion of the population of the USA does not understand biological evolution but are certain that they understand how the dogs, cats and humans all came to be on earth in a special creation.
Fred, I think you do your fellow countrymen a disservice. Americans might have a weakness for religion, but other countries have weakness of other sorts that are equally strange. I’m pretty sure, for example, that you’d be able to find lots of Brits who will tell you that it is immoral for any company to ever make a profit. And indeed a few who will tell you that all Americans own nuclear weapons and eat babies.
Granted there are people like Jonah Goldberg who are either stupid or dishonest, but most of the Americans who don’t know what “communist” and “fascist” mean are ignorant because they have never met an actual communist or fascist, let alone lived in a country ruled by one. If I were you I’d try to keep it that way.
Doesn’t everyone realize that with the recent down turn in the economy that ownership of nuclear weapons is falling dramatically.
Actually I guess I am just grumpy recently. Seeing stuff like this report from Mississippi does not help (although it makes me glad I live in California and not Mississippi):
