Andrewdamus Predicts

Andrew Wheeler has gazed into his tea leaves and predicted who will win this year’s Hugo Awards. Interestingly he has not read or seen most of the works on the ballot. He has based his predictions almost entirely on an assumption of the generally conservative and sentimental nature of the voters. Well it is a method that has worked very well in the past, I think.

  1. He forgets, when using sentimentality, that the Worldcon is in Canada and Cory Doctorow is Canadian. We all remember what won the Best Novel category last time the Worldcon was in Canada, and the general opinion on why it was this happened.

  2. Yep, and the general opinion was mostly horseshit because I very much doubt that there were enough Canadian voters to cause that sort of result all by themselves. The majority of Hugo voters are American, regardless of where the Worldcon is held.

Of course this doesn’t rule out sentimentality. American voters may vote for the “home” candidate. In the case of Toronto they also appear to have voted for someone who had been nominated many times and never won. That may not work for Cory.
