And yet, so the nice filks at Wordsmith tell us, the word “filibuster” originally meant a pirate. The origins are in the Spanish word, “filibustero” with related words in French (“flibustier”) and Dutch (“vrijbuiter”), which of course finally gets us back to “freebooter”.
