The hot news in the UK today is a treasure trove of over 1,500 gold and silver items dating from Anglo Saxon times that has been discovered in a field in Staffordshire. The experts say that the horde is worth a “seven figure sum”, and that it is as significant a find as Sutton Hoo. The BBC has a report and pictures.

I am hugely excited about this as it has so many possible ramifications for what we know about that period and place. The location seems to be quite close to several other sites that are known to have been significant to the Mercian royal lines and the finds themselves indicate all sorts of things about overseas trade links and contacts. It seems to date to what I find, at least, the most interesting and dynamic period in Anglo-Saxon history, too. So I’m a very happy mediaevalist today. And then, the part of me that isn’t Welsh is Mercian, so…
