Reporters Wanted

As I’ll be heading out to the South Pacific in 8 days time (threatened Heathrow strike called off, yay!) it is time to get ConReporter.com out of hibernation again. I have just put out a call for reporters. If you are going to be reporting from Aussiecon 4, or from Au Contraire, or from Dragon*Con, let us know and we can add your reports into the coverage.

Help with the admin for those of you stuck back home would be especially appreciated this time as web access from Wellington and Melbourne may be difficult, and I’ll have Salon Futura #1 to worry about as well.

Lee Harris has been enthusing on Twitter about an iPad application called FlipBoard, which some of you may have. I’m not sure how generally useful it is, but for following a Twitter list of reports from an event it could be awesome.

I know I’m very lucky to be able to afford to go to Australia (Kevin and I are both doing the trip on frequent flier and frequent stay points), but I’ll do the best I can to make those of you stuck at home feel part of the action.

  1. since I’ll be in a different time zone to all, you can, if you need/want, count me in to collate and update as per last year…

  2. There’s a fuss building about the way that Flipboard works. It does have a degree of the awesome about it, but rather than use standard syndication systems to build the news feed, it has a bunch of scrapping software that hunts the root article from the web and displays them in their own format.

They are then saying they plan to monetize using ads on the content they’ve scrapped and plan to offer a revenue share with the original content provider…

It’s the last bit that I think is going to get them into trouble as effectively they’re ripping off other people content without any regard for any license terms for sharing and then planning to monetize it, again without any regard for any license terms for sharing.

As I see it that could pee off two camps – the big content providers who have their own monetization systems AND those sharing their content under a CCL agreement who might not want somebody sticking ads in there and making money off it.

So they’ve hit on a nice idea, but I think they’ve cocked up the implementation.

  3. Since I’ll be at Aussicon you can – just like last time – rely on me too. Also, more connected now with an iPhone and a dedicated Flickr page that is being updated almost daily (and I suspect daily during the convention itself). So just let me know and I’ll send all the appropriate linkage.

    1. Thank you. I think we are good, but if any of your feeds have changed I’ll need the updated links. I’ll check through them tomorrow.

Just out of curiosity, any particular reason you didn’t ask for reporters for NASFiC?

    1. Partly because there was very little interest in the convention, but mainly because I have been working 12 hour days pretty much non-stop to get Wizard’s Tower and Salon Futura up and running in time and get all my day job stuff done for the month before I leave.
