Rugby Mayhem

An amazing day’s rugby in the English Premiership, though sadly it seems that all the wrong teams are winning (at least from my point of view). Thankfully Bath are still in the playoffs, though if Stevens and Mears are seriously injured I don’t fancy their chances. Will, you must be gutted. I know I am, and I’m not even a ‘Quins fan.

Why does Zemanta think I’m writing about Aussie Rules?

  1. Hey Cheryl,

Fortunately I was insulated from the minute by minute stress of watching the game by virtue of being at my best mate’s wedding.

If you’d offered me 6th place at the turn of the year, i’d have bitten your hand off: we lost 12 on the spin in cup and league during the winter.

Annoying to lose at the Tiggers by such a small margin, but the average age of our team is 23.5yrs so plenty of space for improvement there. I suspect young Mr Care is going to NZ this summer, keep an eye out for him.

As a result of the various permutations of qualification I am now in the rather unfortunate position of having to support Bath against Worcester in the Parker Pen Cup. 😉

6 english teams qualify for Heineken Cup, the top 5 league finishers and the Parker Pen winner (unless the parker pen winner has already qualified by dint of league position) So if Bath win, the 6th placed team (Us!) sneak into the cup, if Wuss win it they get in.

I took some pics at the Quins v Sale game the weekend before last:

  2. Glad you are not too scarred, Will.

I’m sure the Bath boys will give their all for you, and I shall be cheering them on (even if Mike Ruddock is coaching Worcester). I trust that you will be cheering for us against Wasps in return. After all, everyone loves to hate Larry, right?

I saw those pictures on your LJ. That’s a very speccy camera you have there.

  3. Lawrence Bruno Nero is now a panto villain, but in general I think it would be a refreshing change for Wasps not to win.

I know it is odd to say of a professional sport but their particular atttitude of ‘win at all costs’ isn’t all that attractive.

A case in point from this seasons A league Wasps A vs Quins A: two minutes to play Quins have an attacking scrum 5 metres from the Wasps line, a converted try would give Quins only a draw. A certain Mr S Edwards runs onto the pitch screaming for one of his props to go down injured, which occurs and causing an uncontested scrum and no chance of a score 🙁

Also I wonder if any other side in the GP would have faced such an easy ride from the authorities over the frozen pitch incident (at a ground that possess underpitch heating…!) earlier in the year, that caused their home game versus sale to be cancelled, and rescheduled to a time at which wasps had all their international players available. i’m not sure that there was even an investigation?

  4. Will, Larry has always been a pantomime villain.

I take your point about the spirit of the game, and I’m certainly deeply suspicious of the frozen pitch incident. As for Mr. Edwards (good Welsh name, that), this is a difficult issue. I suspect that my mother would hold that it is better for a Welsh side to lose with honor than to win by adopting the same dubious tactics as the opposition. As far as I’m concerned, if that’s what we need to do to beat the All Blacks, Wallabies and Bokke, because they use similar tactics, then I’m all for it. Action should be taken at the IRB level, not by individual clubs or nations, if only because individual action is doomed to failure.
