Jon Courtenay Grimwood has written to let people know that his SF&F review column in The Guardian has been cancelled. Shame, he did a remarkably good job there.

now THAT is terrible news…sigh.
Sad indeed. At least Jon actually got a polite letter explaining the decision. My own Guardian experience, years ago now, was that a newly appointed literary editor felt it unnecessary to answer queries from the lowlife sf reviewer who asked plaintively whether his column would continue….
Well doggone it – they have been pretty good by broadsheet standards with SF&F and some decent graphic novels coverage in the last couple of years too. Any idea why they have done this? Seems daft to lose a writer so well respected by readers and authors alike.
Well, Jon’s original email said that it was a one-year project that had actually stretched to five… maybe there’s a new sub-editor at the Guardian who wants to throw their weight around and make changes for changes’ sake or something..?
It’s worth keeping in mind that sf writer Eric Brown is in fact still writing sf reviews for The Guardian’s literary supplement, but not in an isolated section: I managed to get a review of my last book from him in The Guardian after running into him at Eastercon this year. But frankly The Guardian’s been disappearing more and more up its collective arse for the last couple of years. I wonder if they’re getting rid of the occasional crime reviews as well?
