Yesterday was a bit busy, so I didn’t get around to doing an Equinox post. Hopefully this makes up for it. The image is “Primavera” by Sandro Botticelli. Venus is central to the image, but the scene is stolen by Flora, the goddess of flowers.

But who is the woman being assaulted by the dark figure reaching out of the wall? That looks like a story.
The dark figure is the wind god, Zephyrus. He is in the process of raping the nymph, Chloris. As a result she becomes pregnant and transforms into the flower goddess, Flora. Chloris, I think, represents the green meadows that burst forth with flowers when the March wind blows over them. It isn’t a myth I know much about (I think it is Etruscan), and it doesn’t sound very pleasant, but I do like the way that Botticelli has portrayed the powerful, pregnant Flora.
