Things may be looking up for people with Celiac problems in the US, or at least in California. Yesterday I heard Narsai David, the KCBS Food & Wine Editor, talking about it on the radio. Today I found Jerry Pournelle talking about it on his blog. Jerry says:
Despite Celiac’s prevalence in up to 1% of the population, a lot of doctors have no experience in diagnosing it.
Hopefully a little publicity will help change that.
Thanks for that link! I believe I know who Jerry’s referring to as far as the colleague goes. I don’t think being celiac is Jobs’s problem, especially since he eats in Caffé Macs at least occasionally, and it has such great gluten-free choices (and gluten-free vegan choices, which is much harder to accomplish).
There was an armchair hypothesis about Jobs’s condition here from a scientist.
(Disclaimer: I have no information other than what’s been made public.)
Was pleasantly surprised today to see that IKEA has a special menu for celiacs in their restaurant. (Not such a help for those of us who are vegetarians and gluten-free, but it’s nice to see attention paid to the issue.)
Most of the gluten-free foods we get here in Spain (especially at El Corte Inglés, which has an aisle devoted to them in their supermarket) are imported from Skandinavia, with little stickers in Spanish over the original ingredient lists.
