Damien G Walter was at FantasyCon. I’ve been wondering what he would write about it for The Guardian. My curiosity has now been satisfied. Damien has discovered the very wonderful Tartarus Press, and through them Arthur Machen.
Alternatively: Weird fiction – yet one more thing you can blame the Welsh for inventing.
So, I’m an American and woefully ignorant. What other things can we blame the Welsh for inventing, other than the Tudors?
Karen:
Invention is a difficult thing to prove when the mists of history are involved. It seems pretty clear that the English invented rugby, but they had no idea what to do with it (and in many ways still don’t). It is unlikely that the Welsh invented homesickness, but we seem to be better at it than anyone else in the world. We are proud of having come up with Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews, along with a bunch of other people who sing even better but are rather less notorious. And we have a reasonable claim to having invented neo-paganism, complete with silly mock-Druid ceremonies.
Of course we also invented Dave Langford, and that should be enough for any small nation.
