Yes, that “Bristol is in Avon” one is odd. It was always “the City and County of Bristol” on its signs when I were a lad; since 1373 according to Wikipedia, apart from those 22 years after 1974 when it was in Avon.
The local TV news is less likely to lead with lost cats in Yeovil these days, unfortunately, and more likely to lead with murders in Bristol and repatriations of casualties from Afghanistan through RAF Lyneham and Wootton Bassett.
With appropriate name changes, I’ve lived there all over the U.S.
