It was only a 5.2. I’ve slept through earthquakes that strong before. And the epicenter was in Lincolnshire. Goodness only knows what people in London and Edinburgh are so upset about. Of course the damage here is much worse that it would have been in the Bay Area because people do insist on building houses with bricks.

Oh, people build with bricks here in the Bay Area and the West Coast as well — it’s just that their buildings fall down every so often because they do so.
Maybe that’s one reason people from the West Coast are so in awe of old brick buildings elsewhere; it’s nearly impossible for there to be an old building out here made from structural brick. Decorative brick is different, of course, but you have to assume it will fall off the wall now and then.
