Finnish Invasion

Well, a very small one. As Kevin has announced, my good friend Eemeli Aro has won one of the SFSFC SMOFcon sponsorships. I must admit that I was gobsmacked when I found out, but there you go. Eemeli can be very convincing at times. Finnish and American conrunners don’t always do things the same way, but they both seem to share a commitment to putting on a great show, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the two cultures interact. (Hint to Americans: the Finns are just brilliant at getting sponsorship.)

Of course I’ll also have the opportunity to introduce an impressionable young Finn to the fleshpots of Boston. Except that the con is out at Logan airport and I expect that Irma will have already warned Eemeli about Boston before he leaves.

  1. Could you do us all a favor and keep him away from people who would even consider putting the words “Worldcon” and “Nordic” in the same sentence (especially if not accompanied with “never”)?

  2. That could be tricky. The sort of people who go to SMOFcon are generally incapable of speaking any sentence without the world “Worldcon” in it.

  3. Boston IS very dangerous city, indeed. I is the only city I have fell in love with, and thinking the buildings and streets and parks and museums and book shops and restaurants and people twist the knife every time in my heart.

I already told Emeli to carefully avoid the Science centre, the Museum of fine arts (with excellent jpanese culture, amazing pottery too), the museun of the MIT students, walking in Cambridge and especially that wonderful little used books shop beside the central park and the certain church.

He must also carefully avoid people of Boskone, for visiting their wonderful house and receiving the marvellous frindliness makes it hard to leave the city.
