Dave and Barry at Geek Syndicate have posted episode #130 of their podcast series, and in it you can hear part II of their discussion of this year’s Hugo nominees. As I said last week, I find their outsider’s view of the Hugos quite fascinating.
In this issue the boys zero in unerringly on the two hot favorites for Best Novel. They loyally support Doctor Who but can’t decided between Moffat and Davies, and have a long discussion about the Graphic Story category. I was pleased that Dave agreed with me about Fables, but I do understand Barry’s point about there being too many volume-N-in-long-series nominees.
Graphic Story is , while great, kind of a media mish-mash (like BDP was before they separated long and short forms). Maybe, once the dust has settled, say in another decade or two, it will be time to do the same split for graphic story.
That’s pretty much what I was going to tell Barry. First we have to prove to the BM that we have sufficient depth of field and interest in the field to make a viable category. Once that category has proved itself we can look at splitting it.
Cheryl,
There are at least 2 people associated with the nominees from that category attending Anticipation-Bill Willingham(writer of Fables) and Pia Guerra(artist for Y:The Last Man). This shows that some of the nominees do care very much. Perhaps they should be encouraged to speak to the BM.
Nadine:
It is great that they are attending, but it is probably better that they don’t turn up at the BM. The SMOFs tend to take a dim view of professionals who turn up at the BM to say they deserve a Hugo category.
