Haz Bookstore

Work on the new bookstore has progressed to the point where I think I can open it to the public. There’s still a lot of work to do uploading books and learning my way around the new software, but I do need to be able to sell things. Also your feedback would be appreciated. There’s a lot different about this store. The software is a lot more customizable, which is both good and bad because you can do lots, but you have to learn how to do it before you can do anything. One of the things you can do, however, it make embeddable widgets, like this…

  1. My first impressions are very positive! I like the layout and navigation around seems very simple.
I found one issue though. How do I sign in using my old login information? I think I did not have my email address as my old username because the store login software does not recognize it. Do I need to create a new customer account and if so, how would I do it, because I do not see a “register” or “create account” link?
I realize I can buy books as a guest but I was wondering about registering or using my old user account.
    — Ah, Ok, I used the guest purchasing option and then the software asked if I’d like to generate an account.

Otherwise good job and I’m happy to see the store online!

    1. Unfortunately there is no way I could transfer over the old accounts because the new store is with a completely different company. I know what you bought, but I don’t know your password, so you have to create a new account. I’ll look at loading up old purchases so that regular customers have access to them again later, though hopefully you won’t need that.

Shopify asks about creating an account after you have ordered because by that time you will have entered all of the information it needs so there’s no need for extra form filling.

      1. Thanks Cheryl for the reply. Yes, I did realize after thinking a bit about this myself that moving account information would not be possible.
Maybe adding some information in the FAQ for the old bookstore customers would useful. (It could be removed after a while, after a transition period.)

  2. Another thing: The download page gives two links for the ebook. If the book title is long it’s not possible to see which one is for the epub and which one for the mobi version (unless you click on the link first). (The first one is for epub and the second one for mobi.) Not a problem really but just an observation.

    1. Good catch, I’ll check up on that. Though of course you can download both, so there’s no problem if you pick the wrong one.

  3. I like the looks of the new store! Also, the (optional) account creation after the purchase is a big plus in my book.

The software seems to automatically create my login based on the e-mail address I use for PayPal. I don’t see an easy way to change the address in the account settings either. Any way around this?

    1. Not that I can see from the customer point of view. I can change it for you, but that may cause issues with future payments. I’ll talk to the Shopify folks about it.

      1. Thanks, it would be great if the Shopify folks have a solution! No need to change it immediately (and risk problems with the account), but since I only use my PayPal e-mail for PayPal, and don’t want to use it for anything else, I’d be greatful if a solution could be found.

(Of course, if you need a guinea-pig to play around with shop settings, such as the e-mail address, and to report results, I’m game.)
