For those of you who don’t follow Jeff VanderMeer’s blog, Jeff has recently been reading what looks to be a wonderful fake history of a steampunk robot. Here is Jeff’s review on Amazon, and here is his blog post with additional artwork from the book. I want a copy of the book, it looks like really good fun.
For those of you who are too busy to click through, the book is Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel, by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, and it is due out from Abrams Books in October.
Oh, awesome – that stuff’s been on the web forever, and I’ve been waiting for them to get a major label deal. I missed out on the limited edition book they released, so yay.

I remember stumbling across the Boilerplate web site several years ago, and being thoroughly enchanted by it. I immediately e-mailed Marcus Rowland to tell him about it, only to discover that — no surprise — he had known of it for quite some time already.
Thanks for the info, folks.
Now I need to find out how similar that limited edition is to the new release, because I think I may want to nominate this book for a Hugo.
Thanks for spreading the word about our Boilerplate book! Just to clarify, the “book” we previously offered for sale online was a self-published pamphlet that contained the Boilerplate text and images from our web site. For the new Abrams book, we reworked the material from our web site and created tons of new stories and images. Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel contains more than 300 images. Most of the contents have never been published before. We’re very excited about it, and hope you enjoy it! And of course we’d be thrilled by a Hugo nomination, if you’re so inclined.
Anina:
Excellent, that certainly counts as a new publication, and that makes it Hugo eligible. Now we all have to wait for October. I shall make sure I seek out a copy as that only gives us a few months to get people enthused.
