While we were in the Anticipation committee meeting someone else was sending out emails to members informing them that the Hugo voter packages are available. The message doesn’t say what is in it, though I gather from a tweet we caught that Anathem is not included. Scalzi hasn’t posted anything, last I looked. I don’t fancy trying to download it on the fairly slow connection in the hotel here, or on mobile broadband back in the UK, so I probably won’t get a copy until Friday. Hopefully I’ll find out what is in it before then.

The download page includes a list of what is and is not in the packet; they’ve also got the option of downloading by category for the sake of those with slower connections. Here’s to seeing it sooner than Friday.
I downloaded the packet today. It is great to see John S do something like this. I do wish there were more of the Graphic Novels in the packet.
Does it now. Thank you for telling me. I would not have found out because there’s no way of telling that before you have entered your name and password. My immediate assumption was that doing so would cause the download so start, so I didn’t do it.
Interface design, mutter, mutter…
I don’t actually need to get the packet, I need to know what’s in it so that I can tell people.
OK, now I have the list. Just in case I will confirm with people tomorrow that the list of things included is not supposed to be secret, and then I’ll post it.
I can cut and paste it here, if that’s any help.
Two things I noticed:
METAtroplis is listed in both Included and Not Included for Dramatic Presentation, Long Form
Girl Genius (in the Best Graphic Story category) while not being part of the package here, is available free on the web page by page. Start at http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20080204
With regard to the graphic novels, I suspect this is because they are from publishers who are not familiar with the process, and with whom we don’t necessarily have good contacts. I’m surprised about Girl Genius, though.
Cheryl,
I’m not surprised about Girl Genius because it is available through Girl Genius Online. Most of them are 5 page teasers on Newsarama.com and comicbookresources.com. The publishers probably didn’t want to release the whole story for reasons like sales.
But Schlock Mercenary is also available online for free, both as the original daily postings and a collected PDF, so I’m still surprised about Girl Genius.
I’m even more surprised about “The Ray-Gun: A Love Story” not being in the packet, since it’s already available online (see the nominee page) and there’s already an established precedent of distributing the short fiction free.
The word from Rene is that the press release will go out on Monday but they wanted to let members know early so that they could get the big rush for downloads done. That makes a lot of sense.
sorry for the delay on this….in future, email me. I knew! But I wasn’t reading any blogs. Admittedly this was partially because my weekend was truly hosed. And you’ll see that report as soon as I can get to it….
V:
I would have emailed you straight away, except I knew you were at a con and I had Rene to hand to complain to.
