Not much action at today’s WSFS Business Meeting, but it did confirm that the 2013 Worldcon will be in San Antonio, Texas. The bid was unopposed, so this was no surprise. The convention will be called LoneStarCon 3 and the guest lineup is as follows:
Guests of Honor:
- Ellen Datlow
- James Gunn
- Willie Siros
- Norman Spinrad
- Darrell K. Sweet
Toastmaster: Paul Cornell
Special Guests:
- Leslie Fish
- Joe R. Lansdale
The dates are August 29 through September 2nd, and the facilities are pretty much the same as were used for LoneStarCon 2 in 1997.
News of advance bids is as follows:
– London is still unopposed for 2014.
– A NASFiC Bid for Phoenix, Arizona (actually Tempe, which is a lovely location) has been announced for 2014.
– There are two bids for 2015: Spokane, Washington and Orlando, Florida.
– Kansas City is bidding for 2016.
– There are announced proposals for Japan and New York for 2017, but neither made a presentation in Reno.
– A bid has been announced for New Orleans in 2018. As far as I know, this is a “carpet bag” bid, not a project by local fans. (Update: or not, see comments below.)
– New Zealand still has a marker down for 2020.
I don’t understand where they get the balls to call this WORLDcon – 1 year in 10 or more outside the USA
Well if no one else is willing to bid, you get what you get. 2016 would be an excellent year for another European bid as the vote is in London and Kansas City has a poor track record in bidding.
Also, it’s by and for people (fans, guests, etc.) from the world over.
And of course there’s the fact that a con run in country X may have committee members from countries Y, Z, et a. 😉
I don’t think “Worldcon” is a bad or inaccurate name. (shrug)
Um, huh? Of those eight bids, three are for outside the US, and two of those are unopposed. Of the ten most recent Worldcons, five were outside the US.
Also, when non-U.S. sites bid, they usually win (unless they are defeated by another non-U.S. bid). It’s rare for a non-U.S. bid to lose to a U.S. bid, or a non-North American bid to lose to a North American bid.
I think the last time a non-U.S. bid lost to a U.S. bid (or a non-N.A. bid lost to an N.A. bid) was in 1990 for the 1993 Worldcon, when Zagreb came in third behind San Francisco and Honolulu.
I am reminded of the person a few years ago who insisted that “the rules” required that every alternate Worldcon be held outside the USA, based on this pattern (her first Worldcon was ConJosé)
2002 San Jose
2003 Toronto
2004 Boston
2005 Glasgow
2006 Anaheim
2007 Yokohama
2008 Montreal
… and she was complaining that “the rules” were being broken because Montreal “wasn’t allowed” for 2008.
Martha: Consider the peril of making general conclusions based on too small a data sample.
There is that Kevin, Tides do change. It does however make me even more determined to work with EUROCON to make that into a major event.
Cheryl,
Just a note. All rumors the the contrary, the New Orleans 2018 Worldcon bid is NOT a carpetbagger bid. There is a dedicated group of local fandom heading+working on the 2018 bid. Once I get permission to publish, I’ll pass along the contact info.
Also just to shamelessly promote, there’s now a local con up and running.

All the best,

That’s great to know. N’Awlins is one of my favorite cities, and I’m very sad that I can no longer travel there.
Indeed, it is quite sad. I was quite angry when the news broke. I can only hope that some sort of policy change occurs wherein you can travel here again.
On a lighter note, if you haven’t seen it, Mike Glyer’s File 770 did an interview with two of our bid committee members:

Cool, thank you!
In the meantime I shall pine for beignets and Preservation Hall.
Cheryl,
The email for the 2018 bid is neworleansin2018@gmail.com. Fee free to pass the around.
