Well, people also thought that Alameda Single Malt Whisky was weird…
Weird, yes, but that’s Californians for you. To understand why this is so wrong you need a thousand years or so of national rivalry as background.
Ralph spotted a Japanese whiskey whilst we were doing our weekly shopping in Tesco last week! Since it was reduced he did consider buying it but opted for Uncle Jack instead! Phew!
I hates whiskey!

And although i’ve yet to try some, Japanese whisky has a long tradition, Japanese distillers were in Scotland ‘fact-finding’ in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Also one of the top brands is the rather gloriously named ‘Nikka’
Ever had Manx whisky? Only they can’t call it that, for legal reasons.
A former boss of mine proudly brought back the bottle of Japanese whisky had was given at a presentation by Japanese stockbrokers. His face when he picked it up to go home and discovered a blonde circle on his otherwise dark mahogany desk was a sight I shall never forget.
Yeah, I’m aware of the Welsh whisky. I saw it at a food fair last time I was in Cardiff. I’ve not been able to try it yet.
And of course various people around the world have been trying to make whisky for a long time, especially the Japanese. But none of those induces the same sense of cultural wrongness as the idea of English whisky.
