Today’s Economist has a long article on the rise and rise of the robotics industry. Along the way it correctly credits Karel Capek with inventing the word “robot” and discusses how close we are getting to implementing Asimov’s Laws of Robotics. Who says we don’t live in a science-fictional world?

When I owned things, I ad in my collection a 1964 Playboy interview with a panel of “Futurists” including Dr. Asimov, Ray Faraday Nelson… three other guys whom I should remember… all expounding on what technology would be like in far off 1984. The only one who was at all correct was Dr. A, who opined 20 years was effectively nothing and that the only major change he was confident of was the slow evolution of computer controlled robots and their starting to replace mid level factory workers such as in auto manufacture.
