On Traffic Congestion

Jennifer Ouellette’s latest post takes a physicist’s eye view of traffic congestion and will be interesting reading for anyone who wonders why freeway traffic sometimes slows down for no apparent reason. However, it probably won’t be comfortable reading for Libertarians.

  1. It was a curious coincidence that yesterday I was listening to and enjoying Cory Doctorow’s podcast of his novella “Human Readable” which touches on networks, traffic and the idea of ants as a metaphor for the networks.

Thanks for the pointer to the interesting Ouellette post; I found it interesting and a good summary and enjoyed it. I do not see what in the article would be uncomfortable for anyone.

  2. Well Fred, the article is making a powerful argument about how people should moderate their own behavior (and indeed should be encouraged to do so by central planners) for the good of society as a whole. I know a fair few Libertarians who would find that idea unpalatable.
