Nice to see a publishing professional enthusing about how good fans are at running conventions.

Well, as one of the convention staffers, I wasn’t about to put us down. *grin*
Seriously, I think SF&F cons are amazing. From the little relaxacons up to the ginormous conference center takeovers, hundreds of thousands of people put extraordinary effort into making these events work, and we do it for free, for love of fans and for love of fandom and for the sake of helping to create a place that feels a little bit like home. Arisia has more (and better-run) bureaucracy than most companies I’ve worked for, and has been around longer. Worldcon has been around for 70 years! How many corporations are that old? How many non-profits? Not very many.
I’d love to see someone write a real history of the early SF conventions. I can’t imagine what it was like to lay the foundation of something that we now take so much for granted.

Ah, I guess that’s because the request only gets saved when a comment gets saved. Thanks for pointing that out. And I’ll leave the comment there so that other people know.
I’m not a great expert on fan history, but there are plenty of people around who are. Hopefully someone will respond on the subject of convention history.
A friend of mine who was involved in running the local sf society and our recent Finncon has since ventured into politics, and found out the organizational skill she picked up (and also the cadre of friends available to help out in making things run) weren’t something everybody has but something admired and envied even in professional circuits. 🙂
Except that I was too quick on the delete key myself. Sorry about that!
