The latest part of the USA to legalize same-sex marriage is the Coquille tribe, whose lands are in southern Oregon. It is, as yet, unclear how this relates to the rest of the country, because the interaction between the laws of Native American nations, federal law and state law is very confused (and certainly beyond my poor Welsh brain). DOMA means the U.S. federal government doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages, so I don’t see why they’d recognize Coquille ones.
But I’ve never understood the whole Native American setup in the U.S….
Well, according to the tribal ordinance it sounds like one of the partners must be Coquille.

And then there is the issue of whether the states are required to recognize the marriage if the couple live outside Coquille territory.
