Because I’m overloaded yet again (sigh):
– The Economist reports on a fascinating study about differences in the ways in which boys and girls influence each other when learning.
– Theoretical Physicist Sean Carroll talks about how to write time travel stories. (I haven’t listened to this, but as Sean is also known as “the spousal unit” of the awesome Jennifer Ouellette I’m sure he’ll be good.)
– The Guardian on the odd fact that it is OK to be gay in the British army, but not OK to be a gay soccer player.
– John Holbo at Crooked Timber on the ancient Japanese art of paper theater.
As always, interesting links!
The anti-homophobia ad (at top of third link) bites. It’s over the top and takes waaaaay too long to get to the point…and doesn’t show anyone minding homophobia, just tries to tack on a few printed words at the end (is anyone still paying attention? let alone reading the screen?!) to turn it all around.
They should shorten the main part, have another human being (gasp) in the ad saying “hey, that’s not okay here,” and then having the closing part about how it’s not okay in football, either.
Or maybe take a tip from Sinead’s Hand and turn it all on its head….
BTW, I didn’t know investment banking was a “traditionally homophobic, macho and conservative” profession (if you believe The Guardian). I wonder if that’s a UK or European thing, or if it’s also a US thing and I’m just really out of it.
