After much messing around with video files I have managed to get a short clip of the 1979 Hugo Award ceremony onto YouTube (and posted it to the official Hugo Award web site). Here it is.
Unfortunately it seems unlikely that the BBC will issue DVDs of the Time out of Mind series, and it would be unwise to tweak their tails by uploading more than this very short clip. However, I hope to get the rest of the material into a state where it can easily be shown privately.
However, for a little more proof that the BBC cameras were at Worldcon that year, here are a couple of very fuzzy photos. I think they are from the art show auction.
Once again many thanks to Arnold Akien for providing me with this material.
Fun! Back in the days when 70s fashions were simply fashions and not retro fashions for hip young students in a 70s revival…
Well, that was a trip down memory lane.
… and the end when we unexpectedly had Bob Shaw telling us all to go off to drink and dance stood the hairs up on the back of my neck. I so miss that man …..
Thank you! I had wondered whose voice that was. It is, in many ways, the standout moment of the clip.
Yes, me too Paul. Bob is one of those people who was fortunate to have a unique ‘ Voice ‘ in fanndom that Will never be forgotten by those who knew him .. and not just because of his Irish accent but rather because of what he was rather than who he was supposed to be. I still find that, on those few and far occasions on which I go to a convention, I still am saddened to find that Bob isn’t ‘In The Bar ‘ … though in a sense to those who knew him he always will be in that bar wherein he can practice elements of his ‘Serious and Scientific Talks ‘ before he goes on stage … Gods but he was Professional even when it came to being comedic.
How I do miss him.
Hard to believe that the Youthful and Dynamic Cheryl never met him.
The last image has Jack Chalker auctioning off some, I’m sure, wonderful piece of art.
