Virtual Eastercon

Interesting things should be happening at Eastercon this year, especially for those of you who can’t attend.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a panel in social media. I believe it is going out on UStream, and it is apparently using the hashtag #Livecon. Danie Ware is in charge of the festivities, and Paul Cornell is one of the panelists.

Early on Sunday evening there is a panel on virtual conventions. I’ve been asked to moderate this (yes, I know the draft program (PDF) says Maura, long story) and I’m planning to run it as a CoverItLive event. I will be taking questions from the online audience as well as from people in the room.

If I’m slightly breathless on that it will be because it follows directly on from the BSFA Awards ceremony, which I’m also intending to cover using CoverItLive.

More generally, I’m sure that a lot of people will be blogging, tweeting and so on. And, of course, it is a very busy weekend for conventions. Kevin will be at Norwescon. Minicon, Wondercon and Swancon are also taking place. I’ve put out a request for reporters for ConReporter.com. If you are interested, let me know. And if anyone knows of official hashtags for any of these cons, again please let me know.

And there may be one other live event on the Sunday. Watch this space.

  1. Still don’t know if I’m going to be available (maybe I’ll be in Rio visiting my parents), but there’s a chance I’ll be part of the holidays at home. I’ll let you know in a few days, so you’ll be able to count on me if I can work on this for ConReporter.

  2. Tony and I are flying over for Eastercon, partly because we will not be going to Australia this year 🙁

  3. Alas, I will not be able to attend. However my good friends from the US will be there: Jean Goddin and Mike Willmoth. Mike basically runs CopperCon which is a regional convention in Scottsdale, AZ.

  4. Cheryl, I’d like to offer my inworld office in Second Life as a viewing area for the panel. Using SL Viewer 2.0 Beta, we can display the cover it live page inworld, and I can moderate from this side.

Looks that that would be 11 AM, Pacific Daylight Time.

  5. As always – though I can’t attend this year (though I had had some hope I could) I CAN help with Conreporter if you would like.

  6. “I believe it is going out on UStream, and it is apparently using the hashtag #Livecon.”

URL? I have absolutely no idea how UStream uses hashtags; I’ve only ever used URLs to go to a specific event/URL at UStream, although I’ve done that for several years now with Corflu.

Hmm, if they’re doing something online, it would be awfully nice if it were mentioned on the front page of their web page: http://www.odyssey2010.org/

Can’t find anything about it there. Buried somewhere?

    1. Sorry, was imprecise. I think it is going out on UStream. Separately people are being asked to use the hashtag #Livecon in things that support hashtags. I think. Odyssey themselves are not doing this. The people involved in the individual panels have chosen to make them more broadly available. I can only give you firm information about the ones I’m involved in.
