Fascinating post on SF Scope. As I was not affected by the demise of DNA publications I’m not saying anything, just in case people are still sore. However, as a general principle I think that the more small presses we have the better.

Diversity is always a Good Thing.
Don’t know anything about the DNA thing, so can’t comment.
I don’t know any of the particulars of the history of Lapine and DNA, and can’t speak directly to his circumstances.
However, I *have* had experience with other small press publishers who feel a deep “moral responsibility” to all the people they still owe money, and yet rather than pay those debtors go out and commission new work from other writers. Extrapolating from personal experience, I think there’s a simple maxim that can be applied in such situations:
Any writer who submits to a publisher who has yet to pay other individuals for their work–leaving aside any question of “legal responsibility” and different corporate structures or bankruptcy or insolvency–should not be surprised in the least if ultimately *they* don’t get paid either.
